Cass County, Nebraska runs a two-tiered trial court system — a District Court and a County Court — both located inside the Cass County Courthouse in Plattsmouth. These two courts together produce a large body of records covering felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, civil litigation, family law matters, small claims, juvenile proceedings, and probate. The Clerk of the District Court and the Clerk of the County Court each manage their own court's records, and both offices are open to the public during regular business hours.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Cass County?
You can access Cass County court records in person, online through the state's JUSTICE platform, or by sending a written request to the appropriate court clerk.
Online Search — JUSTICE Case Information System
The Nebraska Judicial Branch runs the JUSTICE Case Information eServices portal, which covers criminal, civil, traffic, juvenile, and probate cases filed in all 93 Nebraska counties. Case records include case summaries, party names, offense information, financial data, and a register of actions. Most court-filed documents are viewable online as electronic images. Two search options are available:
- General Search (Free): Search by party name, court type, case type, county, year, judge, or attorney. Viewing the details of any returned case costs $2.00, with no additional charge for document images. Judgment date and case number searches also cost $2.00 each.
- JUSTICE One-Time Court Case Search: A single name-based search costs $17.00 and returns up to 30 records. This option works well for occasional searches if you don't want to set up a subscriber account.
- Subscriber Account: If you search frequently, you can create an annual subscriber account for $100.00 per year, which allows multiple searches. Up to 10 usernames may be assigned to one account.
Free access to JUSTICE is available at courthouse kiosks and law libraries, including the Nebraska State Library, UNL's Schmid Law Library, and Creighton's Klutznick Law Library.
In-Person Access
Both clerks' offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (the District Court Clerk closes from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch). Staff will point you to the right records, but they do not conduct searches on behalf of the public.

Mail and Fax Requests
You can submit written requests for court records to either clerk's office by mail at the addresses listed above. Include the case number or party names, the approximate filing year, and a description of the documents you need. If you need the District Court Clerk to send documents by fax, the outgoing fax fee is $1.50 for the first page and cover sheet, plus $0.50 for each additional page.
Are Court Records Public in Cass County?
Cass County court records are generally public under the Nebraska Public Records Law, codified at Nebraska Revised Statute § 84-712. The law establishes a presumption that all records held by government agencies — including courts — are open to inspection and copying by any Nebraska resident. The Cass County District Court Clerk specifically notes that "all of the clerk's records are public record".
That said, certain categories of records are exempt from public disclosure. Under Nebraska Supreme Court Rule § 1-808 and Neb. Rev. Stat. § 84-712.05, the following records are generally withheld:
- Juvenile case records
- Sealed and expunged court records
- Adoption records
- Medical records of case parties
- Attorney work product
- Law enforcement investigatory records
- Identity of sexual assault victims
- Personal identifying information such as Social Security numbers and financial account details
When a record contains both releasable and protected information, the clerk redacts the restricted portions before providing copies. The Nebraska Attorney General's office provides guidance on public records rights and exemptions for requesters who wish to understand or challenge a denial.

Jurisdiction and Court Structure
Criminal matters in Cass County are split by severity between the two courts:
- Cass County District Court — Handles all felony trials, felony appeals from County Court, and equity cases
- County Court of Cass County — Handles criminal misdemeanors, infractions, city and village ordinance violations, and conducts preliminary hearings in felony cases

Case records include offense information, financial data (fines assessed and paid), and a register of actions.
Arrest Records and Sheriff's Office
The Cass County Sheriff's Office recently launched a redesigned website that gives the public access to an inmate roster, records request services, civil process information, and agency news. You can search the public inmate roster by an inmate's last name. The site also lets residents submit records requests and access online payment services.
Nebraska Department of Correctional Services
For individuals serving state sentences, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services operates an Incarceration Record Search that allows searches by last name or DCS identification number.
Keep in mind that comprehensive criminal history information is primarily accessible through law enforcement agencies. The Clerk of the District Court does not conduct criminal history searches on behalf of the public — instead, the office directs requesters to the appropriate records for self-guided review.
Cass County Civil Court Records
Court Jurisdiction for Civil Matters
Civil cases in Cass County are divided between the two courts based on the dollar amount at issue:
- District Court: Civil cases involving more than $53,000
- County Court: Civil cases of $53,000 or less, including small claims matters of $2,700 or less
Civil case types include personal injury lawsuits, medical malpractice claims, contract disputes, landlord-tenant disputes, and other non-criminal legal matters.

Fines and court costs for civil and criminal cases can be paid online through the Nebraska courts' online payments portal. The Nebraska Child Support Payment Center can be reached at (877) 631-9973 (toll-free), with county case number 20 required when calling the automated line.
Cass County Family Court Records
Family law proceedings in Cass County — including divorce, dissolution of marriage, child custody, child support, and domestic violence protection orders — are handled by the Cass County District Court. The District Court also processes protection order applications, which are available at the clerk's office.
Divorce Records
Divorce case files are maintained by the Clerk of the District Court. Anyone may request access to divorce records, though certified copies are restricted to the spouses themselves, their immediate family members, and their legal representatives. For divorce certificates from 1909 onward, certified copies are also available from the Nebraska DHHS Vital Records Office at a cost of $16.00 per copy. Submit the completed Divorce Certificate Application Form by mail to Nebraska Vital Records, P.O. Box 95065, Lincoln, NE 68509-5065.
Marriage Records
Marriage licenses in Cass County are issued by the Cass County Clerk's Office at 346 Main Street, Room 202, Plattsmouth. The marriage license fee is $66.00 effective July 18, 2026. Marriage records are maintained by the County Clerk's Office and are available to interested persons, though certified copies are restricted to spouses and their immediate family members.

Birth and Death Certificates
Vital records commonly needed in family law matters — such as birth and death certificates — are maintained by the Nebraska DHHS Vital Records Office and are not public records. Only authorized persons may obtain certified copies.

Guardianship Matters
Guardianship and conservatorship cases involving minors that arise in a family law context are heard in the County Court. Records of those proceedings are maintained by the County Court Clerk at Room 201 in the Cass County Courthouse.
Cass County Probate Court Records
Probate jurisdiction in Cass County belongs to the County Court of Cass County, which handles all matters related to the administration of decedents' estates, the probate of wills, trusts, guardianships, and conservatorships. The County Court Clerk maintains all probate case records.
