How Do I Look Up Warrants in Nebraska?
NebraskaCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on NebraskaCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.
You can use NebraskaCourts.us to locate a warrant in Nebraska, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Nebraska's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. A search may reveal the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, when available.
Nebraska's 93 counties — more than any other state west of the Mississippi except Texas, Kansas, and Missouri — each operate their own sheriff's office, district court, and county court. There is no statewide warrant database open to the public. The Nebraska Judicial Branch does operate a case search system called JUSTICE, which covers filings from all 93 county and district courts, but it charges $17 per search (even when no results are returned), limits results to 30 cases, and functions as a docket-search tool rather than a warrant-specific index. It also imposes a 24-hour lag between case entry and searchability. For someone who simply needs to check whether an outstanding warrant exists, running searches across multiple counties through JUSTICE becomes expensive fast.
A consolidated search eliminates the cost-per-query problem and the need to guess which county issued the warrant — a real obstacle in a state where the population centers of Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island sit in different counties and judicial districts.
Are Warrants Public Information in Nebraska?
Nebraska's public records statute, Neb. Rev. Stat. § 84-712, grants all residents — and all other persons with an interest — the right to examine public records free of charge during regular business hours. Court records, including filed arrest warrants and bench warrants, fall within that scope once they become part of a case docket. A magistrate who issues a warrant under § 29-404 does so based on a written complaint and a finding of probable cause; once filed, the complaint and warrant become part of the court's record and are accessible to the public.
The exception that matters most is § 84-712.05(5), which allows law enforcement agencies to withhold records that constitute part of an ongoing examination, investigation, intelligence file, or informant identification. Search warrant affidavits tied to active investigations are routinely withheld under this provision. The Nebraska Supreme Court has held that these exemptions must be narrowly construed — a public body opposing disclosure bears the burden of proving the exemption applies by clear and convincing evidence (Evertson v. City of Kimball, 278 Neb. 1, 2009). But in practice, that standard is litigated after the fact, and most requesters will never challenge a denial in court.
Bench warrants issued for failure to appear under the bail provisions of § 29-901 are part of the open court docket. Whether that docket entry appears online depends on whether the issuing court has been integrated into the JUSTICE system and how promptly the clerk updates the register of actions. Many warrants that are technically public never appear in any searchable online system.
How to Search for a Warrant in Nebraska
- Use NebraskaCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
- Search the JUSTICE case search system. The JUSTICE system, operated by the Nebraska Judicial Branch, covers all 93 county and district courts and allows searches by party name. Each search costs $17, returns a maximum of 30 case matches, and provides three calendar days of access to the results. The system displays case detail, party listings, the register of actions, and document images for filings uploaded after April 16, 2008 — but it is a docket tool, not a warrant index, so a warrant may appear only as a line item in the register of actions rather than as a standalone record.
- Contact the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name and date of birth ready. Under § 84-712(4), the custodian of public records must respond to a written request within four business days — with the records themselves, a written denial citing a legal basis, or a written explanation if the request is too extensive to fulfill in that window. Nebraska residents are not charged for the first eight cumulative hours of search time; non-residents may be billed for all staff time at cost.
- Visit the courthouse in person. County and district court clerks can confirm whether a warrant has been entered in their case management system. Anyone checking on a warrant issued against themselves should be aware that an active warrant may be executed on the spot by courthouse security or a deputy sheriff.
- Retain an attorney. A Nebraska-licensed attorney can make inquiries with the court and the sheriff's office on the subject's behalf and, where grounds exist, can file a motion to quash or recall the warrant without triggering an immediate arrest.
How Long Is a Warrant Active in Nebraska?
Arrest warrants and bench warrants in Nebraska have no expiration date. A warrant remains active until the subject is taken into custody, the issuing court recalls the warrant, or the underlying case is dismissed. Search warrants carry a strict ten-day execution window under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 29-815; an unserved search warrant must be returned to the issuing judge after that period. Nebraska law also restricts search warrant service to daytime hours — 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time — unless the warrant expressly authorizes nighttime execution based on a specific showing of necessity (§ 29-814.04).
Nebraska Warrant Records by County
Warrants in Nebraska are issued at the county level by district courts (felony and high-value civil jurisdiction) and county courts (misdemeanor, traffic, and preliminary hearings), and they are served by the county sheriff. The state does not operate a centralized warrant database that the public can query directly. The JUSTICE system indexes case docket information from all 93 courts but does not function as a standalone warrant lookup, and its $17-per-search fee makes broad multi-county searching impractical for most individuals. To confirm whether someone has an outstanding warrant, a county-by-county search — beginning with the county where the person lives or where the alleged offense occurred — is the standard approach.
