Hall County, situated in central Nebraska with its county seat in Grand Island, is part of the state’s Ninth Judicial District. The county operates two primary trial courts — the Hall County District Court and the Hall County Court — both housed in the Hall County Courthouse at 111 West 1st Street in Grand Island. The District Court handles felony criminal cases, civil matters above the County Court’s jurisdictional limit, and domestic relations proceedings such as divorce, custody, and paternity. The County Court has broad jurisdiction over misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, civil claims up to $70,000, small claims, probate, guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions, and juvenile matters. Together, these courts generate the bulk of the county’s official court records, which are maintained by their respective clerk offices.
Residents and members of the public looking for court case information in Nebraska can access records through multiple channels: clerk offices, public-access computer terminals located inside courthouses, and online search tools. The Nebraska Judicial Branch maintains the statewide JUSTICE case management system, which contains criminal, civil, traffic, juvenile, and probate case data from all 93 counties, including Hall County. The case information portal through NebraskaCourts.us explains the available search options and fee structures for both one-time and subscriber-level access.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Hall County?
There are three principal ways to search for Hall County court records: online through the JUSTICE system, in person at the courthouse, or by contacting the appropriate clerk’s office.
Online Case Searches
The JUSTICE system offers two tiers of access for the public:
- One-Time Case Search: Available through the JUSTICE One-Time Court Case Search portal. Each search costs $17 and returns up to 30 matching case records. Searches that yield no results still require payment. Results remain accessible for three calendar days after purchase. Searches are conducted by party name, with optional filters for court type, case type, county, and year.
- Subscriber Account: Individuals or organizations conducting frequent searches can create a subscriber account through Nebraska.gov. This requires a $100 annual fee and allows up to 10 usernames per account. General searches returning lists of cases are free; viewing the details of any individual case costs $2. Document images filed after April 16, 2008, are viewable at no additional charge. Search criteria include party name, court type, case type, county, year, judge, and attorney.
Case records accessible through online searches are public record and include case summaries, party listings, offense information (for criminal cases), financial information (costs and judgments), and the register of actions.
In-Person Searches
Public-access computer terminals are available at both clerk offices in the Hall County Courthouse during regular business hours. Individuals can search the JUSTICE system at these kiosks free of charge. The kiosks are also available at law libraries across the state, including the Nebraska State Library and UNL’s Schmid Law Library. Photocopying of public records is available at a fee of $0.25 per page (County Court rate per NRS § 33-126.05).

Are Court Records Public in Hall County?
Court records maintained by Hall County courts are generally considered public records under the Nebraska Public Records Statutes. Members of the public have the right to inspect and obtain copies of these records unless a specific legal restriction applies.
Several categories of records are restricted from public access to protect privacy, safety, or the integrity of legal proceedings:
- Juvenile records: Proceedings under the Nebraska Juvenile Code are confidential. Adjudication in juvenile court does not constitute a criminal conviction and does not disqualify a juvenile from future civil or military service under NRS § 43-280.
- Sealed and expunged records: Records that have been sealed or expunged by court order are not available for public inspection or through the JUSTICE online system.
- Victim and witness information: Identifying details of crime victims and witnesses may be restricted from disclosure.
- Records of ongoing investigations: Law enforcement investigative records may be withheld while investigations are active.
- Protection order records: While protection orders are filed in county court, certain identifying details may be restricted depending on the nature of the case.
When a record is partially restricted, the publicly accessible portions may still be available. Individuals seeking access to restricted records should contact the appropriate clerk’s office for guidance on whether a court order or other authorization is needed.
Certified copies of court documents carry a fee of $1.00 per certificate-plus-seal for County Court documents (NRS § 33-126.05), with photocopies at $0.25 per page. District Court certification and copy fees follow similar statutory schedules.
