Platte County, Nebraska, anchored by the city of Columbus, operates a two-tiered trial court system within the state’s Fifth Judicial District. The District Court and County Court each maintain distinct jurisdictions and are the primary custodians of legal records generated by civil, criminal, probate, family, and small claims proceedings. These records serve a wide range of purposes — from legal research and background inquiries to genealogical study and the verification of important life events. Knowing which office holds which type of record is the essential first step for any records search in Platte County.

People researching Nebraska court matters can find useful information and access tools through NebraskaCourts.us, which provides an entry point for locating court case information across the state. Records can also be searched through official clerk offices, public access terminals located in the courthouse, and the Nebraska Judicial Branch’s online case search systems. For the most current and authoritative records, requests should always be directed to the appropriate court clerk.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Platte County?

The Nebraska Judicial Branch operates the JUSTICE case management system, which is the statewide platform for searching court case information across all 93 Nebraska county and district courts. JUSTICE covers criminal, civil, traffic, juvenile, and probate cases. There are two main ways to access it:

Option 1 — One-Time Case Search:
The JUSTICE one-time case search allows any person to search for cases by party name or case number and review results for three days, with a limit of 30 cases per search. The fee for this service is $17.00, payable by credit card.

Option 2 — Subscription Access:
Those who conduct frequent searches can subscribe through Nebraska.gov for monthly billing. This provides continuous access to all JUSTICE cases statewide. More information on subscriptions is available at Nebraska.gov.

Option 3 — In-Person Public Terminals:
JUSTICE public access terminals are available at the Platte County Courthouse for in-person case searches by party name or case number at no charge.

For more details on access policies, the Court Records Search Policy for Nebraska Courts published by the Nebraska Judicial Branch outlines all available search options and applicable fees.

Are Court Records Public in Platte County?

Nebraska’s public records framework, established under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 84-712 et seq., creates a broad presumption in favor of public access to government records. Court records created or maintained by the clerk’s offices are generally open to inspection and copying unless specifically exempted by statute or sealed by court order. The Nebraska Attorney General’s Public Records guidance provides further detail on residents’ rights under these statutes.

Several categories of court records are restricted or exempt from public access under Nebraska law:

  • Juvenile court records — confidential by statute and not available to the general public
  • Adoption records — permanently sealed
  • Sealed or expunged records — court-ordered restrictions prevent public access
  • Victim and witness identifying information — protected in applicable criminal cases
  • Records related to active criminal investigations — may be withheld while investigations are ongoing
  • Certain arrest information — under Nebraska Statute § 29-3523, arrest records where no charges were filed are removed from the public record after one year; arrests resulting in diversion are removed after two years; dismissed charges are removed immediately upon dismissal

For formal written requests that fall under the Public Records Act (§§ 84-712 through 84-712.09), the clerk’s offices are directed to give immediate attention and, where necessary, forward requests to the appropriate court administrator.

Platte County Criminal Court Records

Felony criminal cases are heard exclusively in the Platte County District Court, which has jurisdiction over all felony prosecutions, equity cases, domestic relations cases, and major civil matters pursuant to Nebraska Revised Statute § 24-517. The Platte County Court handles preliminary hearings in felony cases, misdemeanors, traffic violations, and municipal ordinance violations.

For criminal case searches, the JUSTICE system is the primary tool — accessible online via one-time or subscription searches, or in person at the courthouse terminals. The Clerk of the District Court does not conduct criminal records searches for the public but will direct requesters to available records once identified by case number or party name. Copies of records are available for a nominal per-page fee.

For a formal background check on any individual, the primary resource is the Nebraska State Patrol Criminal Identification Division, which maintains the central repository for all Nebraska criminal history records. The Patrol provides two types of reports:

  • Name-Based Criminal History Report — Available to any member of the public. Requires the subject’s full name and date of birth at minimum. Fee: $30.00 (online, in person, or by mail)
  • Fingerprint-Based Background Check — Available only when required by state or federal law. More comprehensive but restricted to authorized requesters

Platte County Civil Court Records

Civil jurisdiction in Platte County is split between the two courts based on the amount in controversy. The District Court handles large civil cases and equity matters without a monetary cap. The Platte County Court has jurisdiction over civil cases involving less than $57,000, including small claims matters.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Nebraska small claims jurisdictional limit increased from $6,000 to $7,500 for most claim types, under provisions updated by the Nebraska Legislature. Small claims are a division of the County Court and provide an accessible forum for straightforward monetary disputes. Filing limits apply: no more than two small claims may be filed per calendar week, and no more than ten per calendar year. Guidance on filing a small claims case is available through the Nebraska Judicial Branch self-help page.

To request civil case records in person, requesters should visit the appropriate clerk’s office, provide the case number or full party name, and pay any applicable copy fees. The Clerk of the District Court Office does not conduct generalized civil records searches but will assist in locating records once a specific case is identified.

Property records — including deeds, plats, deeds of trust, and tax liens — are maintained by the Platte County Register of Deeds, not the court clerks. Records from February 2005 to the present are searchable through Nebraska Deeds Online, which allows free index searches by grantor, grantee, or legal description and provides printable document copies. Documents recorded before 2005 can be accessed through an archived records portal linked from the Register of Deeds webpage.

Probate records — including filed wills, estate inventories, letters testamentary, guardian and conservator appointments, and final accounts — are part of the County Court’s records and searchable through the JUSTICE system. In-person inspection of probate files is available at the courthouse, and certified copies can be requested from the Clerk Magistrate’s office.

For guardianship and conservatorship matters specifically, the Nebraska Judicial Branch maintains a Guardian/Conservator Search tool that allows the public to search active guardianship and conservatorship cases by ward or protected person name. Additional information on the responsibilities of court-appointed guardians and conservators is available through the Nebraska Judicial Branch’s Guardianship and Conservatorship Information page.

When submitting a probate records request by phone or mail, requesters should provide the name of the decedent or ward, the approximate year of filing, and if known, the case number. Copy fees in the County Court are assessed in accordance with Neb. Rev. Stat. § 33-126.05.
